Mayan Riviera Mortgages

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

I just released the web site for ConfiCasa Riviera Maya. ConfiCasa Riviera Maya is in the business of making US bank mortgages available for properties in Mexico. This is a new development the real estate industry here in the Riviera Maya, it used to be that US banks didn’t make loans here.

This last July my good buddy Brian Murphy, the owner of ConfiCasa Riviera Maya was interviewed about mortgages for Mexico in this New York Times article [Warning it’s a PDF].

Improv Everywhere – Slo-Mo Home Depot

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

This past Saturday, 225 Improv Everywhere agents shopped in slow motion at a Manhattan Home Depot. Check out the photos and video in their mission report.

If you are unfamiliar with Improv Everywhere’s work be sure to check out the Best Buy Mission in which a large group of agents entered a Manhattan Best Buy store dressed very much like Best Buy employees and confused the hell out of the people working there.

My Favorite Neighbors – NOT!!

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

I have never had such awful neighbors. And I’ve never had this much resentment build up between myself and my neighbors before. These people seem to specialize in annoying the rest of the people on our street. I’m wondering if they have made a specialized study of “how to SUCK to live next to!”

The family consists of the Mom, who appears to be maybe in her mid to late 40’s. She has garishly bad taste in clothes and wears so much perfume that when she leaves her house I can smell her from INSIDE my house!

Then there’s Dad who is over 50 and who I understand is a doctor, though from what I’ve seen he doesn’t take his own advice (he’s very heavy and very unhealthy looking), and I’m certain that he has poor bedside manner.

There’s an older son who no longer lives with them but occasionally shows up to drink and get loud. Once he and his wife showed up and got into some kind of fist fight in the front yard, there was lots of yelling and pushing. It appeared that someone was guilty of adultery but it was hard to tell exactly who (both maybe?). We were about to call the cops when they abruptly left.

Then there’s son number two, who we believe to be in college, though he keeps some strange hours even for a student. He lives with his folks but doesn’t appear to have a key to the house, so he will show up at 2 am and start yelling “MAAAH! MAAH! hoping that dear mummy will let him in.

And finally there’s a daughter who only sometimes seems to live with them. She appears to be the youngest of the siblings, she might be 19. She often fights with her parents when she IS staying with them (you Go girl!). This is likely why she usually does not stay with them (good for her I say). She has her brother’s annoying habit of yelling MAAH! from the curb at all hours hoping Mom will take pity on her offspring and let her in.

So why do I hate them you ask? Well, just to start, they ALWAYS park in front of my house, so that I either can’t get in and out of my driveway or so that I ALMOST can’t get out. One of these days I’m going crunch their fender on my way out of the drive. Parking is limited here and the rest of the neighbors are super diligent about NOT invading the space in front of each other’s houses. But not my dear lovely most-hated neighbors, they deliberately park in front of my house.

We’ve asked them many times not to park there, we’ve asked nicely, we’ve left notes, we’ve written letters, nothing works. They just insist on doing it.

The other major reason that I can’t stand these people is because of the way they conduct themselves when they have a party! First of all they party a lot and they never have a party which starts earlier than 11 pm and, to boot, their parties are almost always on a weeknight!

They cram some ungodly number of people into their tiny pink house, and these people always spill out LOUDLY into the front and back yards. But the thing that really gets me is when they start the over-amplified karaoke at 2 am in the back yard! This makes it impossible to sleep for anyone within about 10 houses in either direction. Basically they manage to keep the entire street awake all night with their horrible wailing! And the good doctor insists on hogging the microphone, so his off-key warbling becomes the stuff of nightmares. I shudder to think about it. And I have no idea where they got so many friends, they must have PAID them to listen to that awful noise!

Good God but I do hate these people!

I’m sure you are thinking that it can’t be that bad. But it is! I’ve lived next to these people for 3 years. We’ve always been polite and quiet neighbors. But I cannot even begin to count the number of times these nasty neighbors have woken me up, 100 times is probably too low.

It’s a routine with them, come home late, argue under my bedroom window, bang the gate a lot and then leave the main door open and get into a loud fight. If they are not partying, karaoke-ing or yelling they are parked in my way!

I’m certain these people exist to test my faith in god, the universe and all that is supposed to be good in life! GRRR!

Cork’d: Review and Share Wine Online

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

I finally got around to becoming a member over at Cork’d. The site provides a place for wine lovers to share the wines they love and write wine reviews.

I’d been planning to look the site over carefully because it was co-designed by Dan Cederholm who is a very talented designer, so my interest was driven by professional curiosity more than by any major love for wine.

Besides, I’m a wine idiot. I used to think that I couldn’t afford wine I would like because I had a boyfriend whose rich parents used to treat me to expensive wines which were excellent. Back then I never drank wine except when I was around this guy’s folks, and they never popped the bottle on anything that was less that $200 (usd). I loved many of the wines they shared with me, but quickly decided that good wine was going to remain outside of my budget (unless I was willing to marry their son which I was not interested in doing).

Somewhere along the way I decided I could handle drinking affordable wine occasionally. But I still have no real idea what to buy when I stand there in front of all those choices at the liquor store. So I’m excited to have found a resource on the web which might help me make some intelligent choices.

And besides that it’s cool to see Dan’s work in action. Though I do have a couple of suggestions I’ll be emailing to him, just as soon as I get caught up on my work (like THAT’S going to happen).

What Gender is Your Brain?

Friday, August 11th, 2006

I just took this very interesting BBC Sex ID Test which was published by the BBC as part of a series on gender differences. It takes about 15 minutes to do, and you’ll need a metric ruler to complete it. It turns out that my brain isn’t wired all the way feminine or all the way masculine. The test results show that I’m highly empathic, which is a feminine trait, but that I have a very strong brain for engineering, which is obviously a masculine trait and explains why I’ve worked in the computer industry for 16 years. In fact the results in both directions were extreme. It’s very interesting.

When my mom was pregnant with me she was sure I was a boy. I would have been named Kevin!

All Kinds of Graphic Design

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Well, I guess I’ve been web surfing more than usual, I’ve got some more links to share. These are all related inside my head because of the strong graphical element each of them has.

First I found Peter Callesen’s Amazing Paper-Cut Coolness. Callesen’s work is subtle and clever and amazingly detailed.

And then I found the web site for Dubai’s Palm-shaped Island. I hear that this island was created by the same company that rebuilt Cancun’s beaches. Here’s an article on the project.

And finally here’s an article about those Nifty Crop Circles that are always showing up in the English countryside. I don’t know who makes those things. But there does seem to be a certain style that they are always made with, I mean I never see crop circles with houses and cars and people in them, instead they are always made in these abstract geometric patterns. Very cool!

Love those Cats

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

A couple of great cat-related links have come my way recently. One is to a story about a lady who bought a boat to lodge all of the strays cats she was taking car of. In her case she lived on the waterfront so the cats were kept close by. Check out the Cat Boat. Me, I don’t live on the waterfront, so my cats have to settle for lying around on top of my car all day.

And here’s a link to Fatboy Slim’s kitten video. I feel sort of sorry for all the kittens, they don’t all look happy about their costumes, but hopefully they got paid well! Anyway, it’s quite cute, enjoy it!

DreamHost Promo Code – Save $50 on Web Hosting

Monday, August 7th, 2006

After years of hearing nothing but good things about DreamHost I’ve finally decided to switch to them. I’ve been with my current host, who shall remain nameless, for over 5 years and I’ve never had a problem with them, except that they are kind of expensive.

I belong to several email lists of professional web designers and every few months someone asks the other designers what web host(s) they recommend. Invariably lots of people always recommend DreamHost, and also my current host. After that they recommend various smaller web hosting outfits. But it seems like DreamHost always gets the most votes.

When I compared my current company’s hosting plans to DreamHost’s I realized that not only would I save about 30% per year but I would also get WAY WAY WAY more for my money. I’ll get unlimited databases, instead of just 10, I’ll get 60 Gigs of space rather than just 1.5 Gigs and Ill get 1.6 TBs of transfers per month compared to the 80 Gigs I get now.

Another thing that’s cool about DreamHost is that people that I refer will get a $50 discount if they use my DreamHost Promo Code, which is MWSTUDIO. So if you need web hosting don’t miss out on this deal!

Mexican Election Recount

Friday, August 4th, 2006

This weekend Mexico’s electoral tribunal will rule on whether to force a partial or full recount of the votes from last month’s presidential election. Check it out here.

It was obvious that this election would be a close one. I know quite a few right wing Panistas who supported Felipe Calderon. But I know an equal or greater number of people who supported AMLO (Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador) the leftist PRD candidate.

But the disturbing thing is that I have personally heard of quite a few examples of people who intended to vote, and went to their polling places, and waited in long lines, but who were unable to cast their votes due to a lack of ballots. I went with my husband when he voted here and everything was fine. But after the polls closed the stories of problems with polling places started pouring in.

My personal opinion is that with an election this close, with less than a 1% difference between the candidates, they sure as hell better recount, and recount and recount. They’d better recount until the people in this country believe the ballots have been counted properly.

Another great use of Flash

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Well golly gee darn but I do love this one. It’s the Pipe Cleaner Dance. You can play one of several musical tracks and then you can make the pipe cleaner guy dance by running your mouse over the keyboard (weird interface there). Play with it a bit, I got pretty good at it and even started breaking a sweat. Sometimes the internet is all about reliving your childhood. Enjoy!
