Under Development

This blog brings me many compliments (thank you all). But it also brings me some nasty comments and some extremely nasty personal emails.

Often my detractors have clearly not read more than one blog entry and so it’s easy for me to be dismissive of their viewpoints. If you disagree with me so strongly because of just one post, well, I’m sorry. I think that if you bother to read more than one post then you will see that I’m not that feeble-minded or that one-sided, or whatever it is that you think.

I’ve received two “I wish you were dead” emails since I’ve been writing this blog. And there have been countless more nasty comments that have come through. I allow comments to appear that disagree with me if they are in some way constructive. But comments that just call me names and accuse me of living here “because Mexican men will f*ck anything that moves” do not end up appearing on the site.

To my detractors I want to say this: Mexico is a developing country. It is a big, diverse, interesting, beautiful country. But it is a developing country. This means it’s not done yet deciding how it should treat its animals or its land or its people.

So when I bitch about Mexico being full of garbage or full of mis-treated, starving animals or full of people who should know better it’s because I care! OK? Got it? I care.

If you read my blog for more than one post you will see that I spend a lot of my time doing community work here and volunteering my time to make Mexico a better place. I do this because I care. Capiche?

And to those ex-pats who get miffed at me when I point out that this “paradise” you’ve moved to is less than perfect I say “Get out there and make Mexico a better place.” Mexico is not benefiting from you getting all ga-ga about it’s beaches and pretending that everything here is hunky-dory. So quit with the “See No Evil” routine and get out there and pick up some garbage and adopt a street dog and raise some consciousness with your own blog.

OK then.

You know in the last week I have gotten a three horrible comments from readers of my blog. Actually they may have been from the same person since after the first really nasty one from anonymous I changed the comment rules to only people who log in with a Google login.
One person told mine I was full of myself in all of my post. The funny thing is most of my 90 or so posts really do not have anything to do with me personally. I write a lot about my travels mostly to México or my daughter and what has transpired in her life since she nearly died in December. One commenter called me a COW. I guess they thought that I would actually publish their sick comments?

Hear hear! I have always known you to be an honest, straight-forward and truthful person. And how many times do I have to say blogging is about what YOU choose to say? I like your blog for its honesty. I’ve lived there, I’ve seen it, and I’m with you. It stuns me that you receive hatemail for what you know to be true.

Ungrateful people that have nothing else to do but bitch! Your blog is great and telling the truth is most important. I’ve traveled to Cancun for the past 25 years. (3 – 4 times a year) Life isn’t rosey there, but it is a beautiful place. Be careful of the threats .. And to those who are so bitchy .. f’ck off ..

    Can I get an AMEN!
Yes, it is paradise here- and like you say DEVELOPING (paradise)!
Not even to mention, that Quintana Roo has not been a state for very long AND is still working on simple things, like Cancun’s infrastructure, which was never planned, since it was not designed to be as big and populated as it is!
It is not senseless complaining if you are raising consciousness and getting out there and trying to do something that could make a difference.
I truly believe in freedom of speech- which means that I believe in protecting the rights of rude people that talk out their @$$ (along with everyone else)- I wish those people would be so kind as to give non-rude socially conscious others, the same respect.

I have been reading your blog for quite awhile and I have NEVER seen anything that should elicit such negative remarks and reactions from readers. I may not always agree or see things the same way (although, I think we are pretty like-minded) but your posts are always thoughtful and fair. I am certain you have way more fans than detractors. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks Joe, you rock!

And Michelle, I think that the people who dislike what I say are just particularly obnoxious about letting me know their thoughts, so I notice them.

Rivergirl, it seems to me that the bloggers who get these awful comments usually live in tourist areas. It’s as if the commentators have a stake in perpetrating the Mexico as paradise image and feel threatened by any reality. Also some of those types of peoples seem to be head in the sand, they don’t want to know about any imperfections because then they would have to deal with them.
Then there are the people who are looking to take offense, anything that can be misconstrued is grist for their mill. Hang in there.
    regards,
    Theresa

Rivergirl, I’m flabbergasted that someone would take the time to leave a comment and only to be so nasty. That they actually took the time to come to your blog and not read more just shows how narrow minded they must be. It was reading your blog (and a little encouragement from you personally) that got me into creating my own. You are inspiring to say the least. Keep up your great words of wisdom, and to those few pin heads… they can go stick their heads back in the sand!

    a faithful reader

Wow! I’m shocked! In 4+ years of travel blogging I’ve never received any of those kind of emails (unfortunately, except from immediate family. Sigh

I guess that is one good thing about being unknown in the blogosphere.

And I agree wholeheartedly with Michelle. I can’t believe anyone would find anything so offensive in your blog that they would need to spew.

Chin up; you’re doing a great job (but you don’t need me to tell you that. :))

ALSO..THOSE COMMENTATORS ARE NEGATIVE BUTTHOLES WHO ARE ACTUALLY QUITE JEALOUS YOU LIVE IN CANCUN AND ARE HAPPY

BOOKING A VACATION PACKAGE IS EASY FOR THEM AND IF IT IS AN AI PACKAGE THESE BURPSTERS MAY NEVER SEE CANCUN OR OUTSIDE OF CANCUN

After 10 years as a Cancun hotel zone visitor, an avid deep sea fisherman, many Mayan tours and nosing around, I would love to live in Cancun and I know it most likely it would not be in the hotel zone. I looked around and saw both the good and not so good.So what…. I still want to live there.

I SHIFT GEARS WHEN I GET OFF THE PLANE AND WELCOME THE CHANGE. IT IS PART OF MEXICO AND THE PEOPLE

When this all inclusive Gringo leaves a tip for the cleaning ladies, the bellhop, waiters,
the bartender (Hic!)and the front desk I see immense appreciation and not expectations.
    To give is to recieve.

PHEW JOE GET YOUR SOAP BOX.!!!!! LOL

I read Living in Cancun a lot and see what it takes to “Make It In Cancun” by reading those folk’s efforts to maintain the piece of the good life they have.

Kim all your activites, netwoking and how you keep juggling all the balls in the air at once are what puts you in the position to make diverse comments about Cancun and Mexico. It “is” because you care and your writings indicate this advocacy.
That is why you are and will continue to be successfull and happy in Mexico.

SCREW THE ALL INCLUSIVE BURPSTERS OR WHOEVER WHO THINK THEY ARE MAKING COMMENTS. WHEN COMMENTS GET NASTY THEY THEN BECOME SUBJECTIVE AND JUDGEMENTAL.

I really believe it should be called “MAKING IT IN CANCUN”

    KEEP ON ROCKING KIM !!!!
