I went to Tulum in Aug '08 and it was the most wonderful trip. We stayed 2 nghts in the local hostile which was right on the road leading to the beach area. The hostil was concrete floor/wall with metal bunk beds but we were given clean sheets and our room had a window air conditioning unit but was nice a cool thru the night on a hot August night. The last night in Tulum we stayed at the Playa Azul on the beach. It had a natural aircondition, salt water breeze from the ocean. It was the most spectacular view and place. Only a mile up from the Sian Ka'an Reserve and completely tropical with glistening white beaches. The hostil was $7/nt and we were served a mess hall type breakfast each morning. At the tropical palace on the beach a little tiny beach lizard chewed thru the top of my peanut can and helped himself. We only planned for 3 nts in Tulum and I wish we would have planned more. It is the most amazing place and I can't wait to get back there. I hope it doesn't change too much until I do.

I will tell you that I stayed at one the Eco-Tulum hotels. But there are a number of small hotels along the beach in Tulum, all of them have great views. I recommend checking TripAdvisor reviews, you'll find a good hotel there.

Hi there, wonderful article and even though the hotel was not so great, could you please let me know where this hotel is and the name of it? I am willing to put up with lack of maintainance for exchange of this view.

Tulum is beautiful. And the hotel is well-located. It's just too bad that the hotel didn't have better maintenance.

Great pics Rivergirl, thanks for sharing! Sorry to hear about the hotel, but it looks like you found some beauty out there anyway.
