The Parque Kabah: Cancun's Natural Oasis

The Parque Kabah is an oasis of nature in the bustling city of Cancun. People come to run, walk, and enjoy nature. There is a loop trail, a playground, a museum, a picnic area, a duck pond, and a small zoo. The park is full of wildlife; coatis and iguanas are spotted daily, deer and peccaries are also present. There is a wild spider monkey that may be seen swinging through the trees. Birds are numerous and loud in the Park, especially in the winter months when many species migrate south from the colder parts of North America. The pond is home to ducks, geese, and turtles; occasionally a heron is spotted there.

Museum: The museum is housed in the Casa Maya, which is one of Cancun's original buildings, the Casa Maya was originally built on the beach but was later moved to its present location. The museum has displays showing the history and development of the city of Cancun and the Hotel Zone. The aerial photographs showing the progression of the development of the city and the destruction of nature are definitely worth a look. The museum is free and is open daily.

Trail: The Park has a loop trail which is about 1.2 miles (1.8 km) around. The trail is rough but basically flat.

Many people use the Park to work out. The trail fills with runners and walkers between 7 and 9 am. There is a spot along the trail where one can do sit-ups, push-ups and other exercises. This area is shady in the morning, but gets full sun later in the day.

People pushing strollers with larger wheels have an easier time than those with small wheels. Bicycles are not allowed on the trail.

Zoo: It's small but worth a quick look. There are crocodiles and spider monkeys. Fortunately they are separated. The monkeys are doted upon by the Park's employees; the Park's Director is often seen with a monkey clinging to him and trying to remove his glasses.

Getting There: The Park is located at Kabah and Nichupte Avenues, across from Costco. There is a large parking area and an entrance on Kabah; the main entrance is on Nichupte. The park is free and is open daily from 6 am to 4 pm.
